Michael S gains strength and mobility after SCI
My name is Mike and I was 23 years old when I was injured in August 2008. I was skimboarding at the beach when a wave flipped me off my board. I fractured my C5 vertebrae and had surgery to replace my C5 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
I went to Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia for physical and occupational therapy as well as therapeutic recreation for about 2 ½ months. For the next 8 months I was in my power wheelchair going to physical and occupational therapy 6 hours/week. I was learning how to adapt to my injury but not getting as strong as I wanted to be. My workouts were very limited.
Increased workouts at NeuroXcel improved core strength, stamina and decreased spasms
Now that I have started at NeuroXcel, my core strength has improved, my arms are stronger and the muscle tone in my legs is improving. I am in the gym 5 days a week for a total of about 20 hours each week. My muscle spasms have decreased and I am able to do more with my arms and hands. I have improved stamina when I push in my manual chair.
The other benefit of NeuroXcel is the friendship and encouragement of the other clients and the trainers. Their equipment is state of the art and I look forward to going there everyday. I recommend this program to anyone who is serious about gaining as much strength, functionality, independence and neuro-recovery as possible.
